Running a self-service photo booth at a café, pop-up, or brand event raises an obvious question: where do the photos go? For Receipt Camera®, the default answer is straightforward. By default, the device does not store or upload captured images. The thermal print that comes out of the machine is the output. For events that also want to hand out a digital copy, the app lets the operator optionally turn on a QR-code download, explained below.
Privacy-first by default
Receipt Camera® is built around a single principle: the photo is for the guest, not for a database. In the default setup, a guest stands in front of the lens, takes a photo, the machine prints it, and that is the end of the image’s lifecycle. There is no memory card filling up behind the scenes, no automatic cloud backup, no admin panel showing today’s photo log.
Unless you turn on a specific feature, no photo remains on the device. Print, and move on to the next guest.
Optional digital download, only when you want it
Some events do want to give guests a digital copy too. For that, the app lets you turn on a QR-code download for the guests who want one. Scanning the QR downloads the original photo. With AI Profile on, the guest receives the AI Profile video, the AI-filtered photo, and the original photo from before the filter. With Pingpong shot on, the motion photo that loops back and forth, the guest receives it together with the original captured photo. The original photo is always included.
There are two ways to place the QR code on the print. Composite overlays the QR code directly on the photo and prints them as one piece. Cutting prints the QR code as a separate piece alongside the photo. Pick whichever fits your print’s design.
The key word is optional. The feature is off by default, the operator turns it on only when needed, and guests only take a copy if they choose to. If it stays off, the device works exactly as described above: print-only, with no photos retained.
Even when it is on, the files do not stay forever. The download page stays open for 72 hours and each file can be downloaded up to 10 times; after that the page no longer opens and the photos and videos are deleted from the server. Files are held only long enough to hand them over, then removed.
QR photo download, including Pingpong shot, is a feature you activate by choosing the Extended subscription plan. AI Profile, though, is a paid feature billed in AI credits, so the download QR that delivers its video works without an Extended subscription.
That lets operators choose how to run: keep the default (print-only, nothing retained) where privacy comes first, or turn on the QR download at events where digital originals, AI-retouched versions, and the Pingpong shot are part of the experience.
Why portrait rights matter in an event context
In most markets, capturing and retaining images of people without their knowledge creates legal and ethical concerns. Portrait rights and personal data regulations vary by country, but the underlying question is the same: does keeping a guest’s photo require their explicit consent?
Because Receipt Camera® retains no image files by default, operators at events, stores, and exhibitions start from a much simpler picture. Unless the download feature is switched on, there is no stored data to manage and little risk of guest photos leaking after an event closes. When a digital copy is needed, it can be enabled selectively for that event.
What guests actually walk away with
The physical print is the keepsake. Each Receipt Camera® model uses thermal printing, the same core technology as a shop receipt, to produce a black-and-white image in seconds. The guest tears it off (or peels it, for label sticker paper) and takes it with them.
That receipt-style aesthetic is intentional. It reads as a handmade artifact rather than a polished digital photo, which is precisely why Receipt Camera® is popular at brand events, cafes, and pop-up stores.
Lower data-management overhead for operators
Running a photo station at an event already requires significant logistical focus. Adding photo file management on top of that, backing up images, deleting them after the event, and protecting them in transit, adds work and risk.
In the default mode, none of that applies. The operator loads a roll of thermal paper, guests take prints, and the paper roll is the only consumable to track. When the download feature is switched on, photos are handled with privacy as the priority and only as needed, so operational overhead and risk stay low.
This is especially useful when a brand wants to minimize data collection while still offering a memorable photo experience. A café running a Receipt Camera® in the corner is providing a guest amenity, not building a photo archive.
The print is the product, digital is optional
By default, the choice to avoid storage is a strength, not a limitation. Receipt Camera® is a printing object, not a camera permanently wired into a data pipeline, and the core value lives in the physical print the guest carries away. When a digital copy is needed, QR download can be added optionally, so you gain flexibility without giving up the privacy-first default.
